Renowned chef and Spekko Rice brand ambassador, Yudhika Sujanani, has joined the Joburg.co.za, Durbs.co.za and Capetown.co.za teams to present a delicious new foodie section called "What's Cooking?" This exciting new venture is proudly sponsored by Spekko Rice!
The saying that dynamite comes in small packages is certainly true when it comes to Yudhika. There's an awful lot of talent crammed into a very tiny body. Like the food she creates, she is completely authentic. It is her down-to-earth nature and wicked sense of humour that endeared her to the Joburg.co.za team, as it no doubt did to all the celebrity chefs she has cooked with over the last few years.
Says Shelli Nurcombe-Thorne, Sales and Marketing Director of Joburg.co.za, "Joburg.co.za has been searching for the right foodie, someone who will do the Joburg newsletter justice, someone that I know our readers will fall in love with at first bite, and we've finally found her!"
The Spekko Rice partnership with Yudhika has also evolved naturally through previous ventures such as The Good Food and Wine Show as well as Spekko Rice's involvement in the Table of Peace and Unity events. The sponsorship of the What's Cooking? section in the Joburg newsletter will take their relationship to the next level, and it has been an exciting development, eagerly anticipated by all parties!
Food has always been a big part of Yudhika's life. She tells us that some of her fondest memories of food are generally about aromas, like the aroma of lamb curry being prepared when she came home from school or the smell of chicken breyani being prepared by an elderly aunt at a wedding. Later in life, she recalls the complex aromas at the street stalls in Asia.
While Indian food is what Yudhika does best, her extensive travels across Asia sparked a love for Asian food. During her travels, she would roam the food markets sampling the unique street foods and watching the dishes being prepared using the freshest of ingredients and the bare basic utensils.
"It amazes me how quickly the food is prepared with just the basics and yet the array of flavours is just beautiful. This is how I like to cook, uncomplicated, simple and using only the freshest and best quality ingredients... that's also why my relationship with Spekko Rice has also evolved so naturally!” Yudhika maintains.
“I do believe that creating wonderful meals is about common sense and combining flavours. Before I start to prepare a dish, I consider the ingredients and consider how the dish would taste. My mind works in smell, taste and flavours," she says.
Yudhika has her own distinctive style and is not afraid to experiment, making her food less 'polished' and 'stuffy' but as a result, even better.
In what is known as a very challenging industry, Yudhika has gained the respect from many fellow chefs for her passion and unique sense of style.
According to Jonita Cuff, Spekko Rice National Product Manager: “We are delighted to be involved in such a fantastic endeavour. Yudhika's recipes showcase the entire Spekko rice range in such a fresh and innovative way, making the whole experience of preparing a meal both easy and enjoyable. We have no doubt that this new partnership will grow from strength to strength and we are looking forward to providing a bit of cooking inspiration to families all over South Africa!”
