Sheraton Hotels & Resorts announced yesterday, Monday, 8 February 2010, that it is highlighting its US$6 billion (about R46 billion) three-year global brand overhaul, with a US$20m (about R155 million) multi-media marketing campaign. 
“The internet has progressed at a tremendous speed and we are finding more people are choosing to go online to make their bookings,” said Danny Bryer, group marketing & revenue director, Protea Hotels. “The convenience factor has allowed people to do their own research, planning and booking without any hassle.” 
The University of Johannesburg's School for Tourism and Hospitality (STH) management received a new year's generous donation of cleaning equipment from Numatic International, amongst the leaders in the hospitality cleaning industry. 
Match, FIFA's accommodation agent, recently relinquished its reserved bed nights back to local hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses, amounting to roughly 15 000 beds per night. It was alleged that a number of properties were overpriced, which led to a decrease in the number of visitors prepared to rent out the properties. 
The current titleholder of the inaugural Global Pizza Challenge (GPC) 2009, Odette Williams, owner of Mi Casa Café, Sodwana Bay, now has the opportunity to present her winning SA pizza at the GPC International Final to be hosted in Melbourne Australia on 15 May 2010. 
The first six-month course for 2010 has started at the Tiger Brands' Catering Incubator, run in association with the South African Chefs Association (SACA). It provides 28 budding caterers with the skills to build a career in the challenging and globally competitive world of cuisine. Zin Mabaso, managing executive: groceries at Tiger Brands, will oversee the project. 
Hostex Cape, to be held from 8-10 March 2010 at Cape Town International Convention Centre, from 10am to 6pm daily, promises to be improved. It offers over 220 exhibitors, plus the SA Chefs Village and HomeGrown/SME Village and new features, such the Global Pizza Challenge, Wine Circle, Greenstuff Village and Green Hotel. 
CapeInfo.com is running a national monthly survey on its website to research the current accommodation bookings for the FIFA 2010 World Cup and prices charged. The January survey has received 250 responses so far. 
By late December 2009, three football teams had confirmed their bookings for base camps in the Western Cape in the Cape Garden Route and Klein Karoo regions.
